Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram

Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram, also known as DPS R K Puram or DPS RKP, is a private secondary school run by the Delhi Public School Society in Rama Krishna Puram, New Delhi, India. It is a co-educational day and boarding school with around 12,000 students spread across its three campuses. DPS RKP is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Indian Public Schools' Conference (IPSC) and the National Progressive Schools' Conference (NPSC).

History

DPS R K Puram was the second school founded by the Delhi Public School Society, the first being the Delhi Public School at Mathura Road. The DPS in RK Puram was established in 1972 by Mr. R. S. Lugani. While remaining part of the DPS Society, the school at R.K. Puram soon became independent of its parent.

Campus

The student body comprises day scholars and boarding students. Accommodation is provided to more than 400 boarding students within the on-site girls' hostel and the boys' millennium hostel - located across the road on the school's sports campus. The boys' millennium hostel was opened in 2000. The millennium hostel is headed by Dr. Daulat Ram Saini who is currently the Principal.

The school's facilities include two libraries that house approximately 50,000 books in the senior library, and 10,000 books in the junior library; a reading room; a video library; school counseling centres; an audio-visual hall; an air-conditioned Seminar Hall, and a bookshop. The school has laboratories for computing, Shogun, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, language, robotics and mathematics.

The Sports Complex has facilities for volley ball, cricket, football and golf, basketball, squash, lawn tennis, table tennis and badminton courts. It also comprises three swimming pools, two gymnasiums and two lawn bowls field.

Achievements

On 29 August 2002 during the "1st Computer Literacy Excellence Awards for Schools", President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam presented an award to Dr. (Mrs.) Shyama Chona, the former Principal of DPS R K Puram. The award was for the Best School at the State (Delhi) Level and the 2nd runner-up for the entire country. In 2008, Dr. (Mrs.) Shyama Chona received the Padma Bhushan award.

In 2003 DPS R K Puram were the recipients of the United Nations Global Leadership Opportunity and as a result in 2007 the school was invited to host the 2007 Global Classrooms international programme.[1]
